How to Start a Cake Business Blog

Learn to start a cake and food business blog with this comprehensive guide.

In my opinion, business blogging has been completely underrated and slept on as a marketing strategy. In fact, if you want to advertise your business while adding value to your customers and reaching potential customers, blogging is the perfect way to go.

When I first got into helping food business owners, one of the first blogging comments I heard from a client was that they "tried blogging" in their business before, but they stopped because it didn't work. Now, mind you they posted about dogs and literally everything else that had nothing to do with their actual products or services. Ummm...yeah, no wonder their blog "didn't work"!

Prior to launching a blog for your cake and food business, you should have a plan so that you don’t feel overwhelmed. Blogging may be relatively straightforward to set up, but it can involve many points of consideration that you may not be accustomed to as a newbie. To help you get started with launching your food business blog, I’ve provided a few tips in this post to lead you in the right direction.

4 Considerations when Starting a Cake, Food Business Blog

  1. Identify Your Ideal Reader (aka Potential Customers)

  2. Communicate a clear and direct message

  3. Pick a Blog Hosting Platform

  4. Share content of value

#1 Identify Your Ideal Reader (aka Potential Customers)

When beginning your blog, it's essential to first recognize your target audience or niche market. Since this blog is meant to drive traffic to your business’ website, the assumption is that your audience will be potential customers.

The Paretto Principle suggests that you should identify the top 20% of your key customers or audience, as this will help you obtain the 80% of business sales you desire. Therefore, identify topics of interest to the 20% of your customer base and create content around those areas.

#2 Communicate a clear and direct message

As you start your business blog, the first step is to decide what to share with your target audience. Make sure your writing is engaging so your customers actually read your posts and learn something from them. Don't fall into the trap of just writing anything to keep your blog alive. Instead, make sure you are knowledgeable about the topics you are discussing - this will increase your chances of gaining loyal customers.

#3 Pick a Platform: Decide where your blog will “live”

When setting up your blog, it's a good idea to think about the best place for it to call home. You could host your business blog on any number of online platforms, but it makes sense to have it hosted on your own website. Many web design platforms like Squarespace and Sugarwebspace allow you to add a blog directly to your website, but if your web host doesn't offer that option, you could always try a blog system such as Wordpress – and then link it to your website with a few simple buttons.

#4 Share content of value

Putting effort into writing down your thoughts, pooling observations and viewpoints into your blog isn't enough. You need to make sure it's something unique that your customers won't find anywhere else. Adding a bit of freshness and flavor to your blog is what will really get people coming back for more.

If you're having a hard time coming up with content, why not use some of the questions you get asked on a regular basis? Start your blog by providing answers about your business, event planning or even how to place an order. It'll be a great resource for your customers to refer to when you're not around, while also helping to build trust in your expertise.

In conclusion…

Keep in mind that a successful business blog doesn't simply contain posts with a lot of marketing and sales rhetoric. Instead, your blog should focus on topics that are relevant to your potential customers and will add value to their daily lives. Make sure to be genuine and sincere in your writing, and you'll see your business blog become very successful.
