Bear steals, eats 60 cupcakes from Connecticut bakery

“We’re safe but the cupcakes aren’t.”

Avon, Connecticut, witnessed an unexpected and adrenaline-pumping event at Taste by Spellbound bakery when the delivery of delicious cupcakes took a turn reminiscent of an episode from the cartoon Yogi Bear. The bakery's staff found themselves face-to-face with an unlikely intruder - a black bear. What initially seemed like an ordinary day of cupcake deliveries turned into a memorable adventure, leaving both bakers and bear equally surprised.

While loading the delivery van, the bakery staff’s routine was interrupted by the appearance of a black bear, emerging from behind the dumpsters. In a comical twist of events, the bear seized the opportunity and sauntered right into the bakery’s garage. Maureen Williams, one of the employees, found herself in a rather sticky situation as she was closing the van doors when she noticed the bear approaching the vehicle.

With a mix of shock and determination, Williams yelled to startle the bear and prevent it from getting too comfortable. However, the bear seemed undeterred and returned not once, not twice, but three times to the scene. The bakery staff's attempts to shut the garage door failed, leaving them in a suspenseful face-off with their curious and unwelcome guest.

During the encounter, the bear decided to showcase its bluff charge skills, leaving Williams with no choice but to retreat cautiously back into the bakery. The bear's huffing noise, coupled with its advancing movements, made it clear that this was no ordinary bakery visit. Realizing the door couldn't be closed in time, Williams skillfully backed out and made a run for it, allowing the bear time to itself to enjoy treats from the bakery.

As the bakery employees regrouped and tried to scare the bear away, the bear made its way to the delivery van and triumphantly helped itself to close to 60 cupcakes and some coconut cake. Ignoring the commotion caused by the staff's valiant efforts to shoo it away, the bear gleefully grabbed a container and dragged it to the back parking lot. Thankfully no one was hurt. However, surveillance footage from the neighboring business shows that the bear definitely was giving off “Yogi bear foraging for picnic basket vibes.” That bear definitely had a sweet tooth!

Local authorities arrived on the scene to ensure that the bear retreated into the nearby woods. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) took swift action, setting up a bear trap baited with sweets, hoping to prevent further bear-related bakery escapades.

The unexpected visit from the bear has put Avon's local business owners on high alert. Having encountered a bear before, Matt Dean of M&R Liquors (next door to the bakery), understands the importance of staying vigilant. The business has even captured the bear's escapades on security cameras, revealing its familiarity with the area, particularly the dumpster. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection reminds everyone that bears accustomed to human presence can become problematic.

The cupcake caper in Avon has left the community on its toes, highlighting the unpredictable encounters that can arise even in the most unexpected places. As the bakery staff reminisces about their adventure with the bear, they now approach their routine tasks with an added dose of caution. Who knew that a simple delivery of cupcakes could turn into a story they’ll never forget involving a pastry-loving bear?

The community reacts…
