What are the most important factor(s) behind your success?

Dana Cockrell , Owner, Cake Artisan

The most important factors behind my success or the success of my brand are having a website, using a payment processing service, issuing invoices, and presenting clean photos of my work. These four things add legitimacy, respect, and confidence in my customers, who expect more and are willing to pay more for a professional and reliable service.

A website allows me to showcase my work and communicate with potential clients, while a payment processing service streamlines the payment process and protects both parties. Invoices help me keep track of my sales and taxes, while clean photos of my cakes and cookies help me stand out and attract new customers.

Overall, I believe that investing in these essential elements of my business has helped me grow my reputation and succeed as a cake artist and entrepreneur.

Let's hear a little more about you, Dana. What’s your story?

I am Dana Cockrell, Owner, Chef and Cake Artist of Dana’s Cake Creations. Though I am an accountant by trade, I have always been a cake decorator at heart. My love for baking began when I received an Easy Bake Oven at the age of 4. By my senior year of high school, I was in charge of all family baking.

I fondly remember the cute birthday cakes my mom made for my brother and me as children. In 2004, I enlisted a friend to take Wilton Decorating classes with me, offered at Michaels and Hobby Lobby. After completing several classes, in 2006 I launched Dana’s Little Cake Confections, specializing in custom and homestyle cakes and cookies for family and friends. Since then, I have honed my decorating skills as my love of the craft has grown.

In 2018, I realized my passion was custom celebration and wedding cakes and rebranded to Dana’s Cakes Creations. My business is a home-based cottage law bakery that specializes in custom ‘Cakes for All Occasions’. My goal is to work with you to design and execute your vision and make your event truly unforgettable.

In 2022, we were featured twice in Bham Now as a Black Owned Bakery to know in the metro Birmingham, Alabama. Since the rebrand in 2018, our gross revenue has increased 525% and we’ve added on new celebrity clientele.

In addition, I also teach new decorating techniques to veteran decorators, and for the past 5 years I’ve served as the Treasurer for Sugar Artist of Alabama (formerly Alabama chapter of ICES). Outside of baking I am a Board member & member of the Executive Committee for the YWCA of Alabama.
