Meet Jean Schapowal

Jean Schapowal 🍥 Cakes with Character, Cake Artist 📍 Hicksville, NY

What are the most important factor(s) behind your success or the success of your brand?

Jean Schapowal, Cake Artist

I used to be afraid of putting myself and my work out there, and I kept to my small little part of Long Island. However, with the emergence of social media, online cake groups, cake shows, and competitions, I found my voice.

Embracing this opportunity, I gradually stepped out of my comfort zone and began sharing my creations more prominently. I put myself out there more and more and found ways to exhibit my talent such as submitting my work to magazines and participating in cake shows.

Additionally, I explored collaborations and experimented with new mediums, all while remaining true to my unique style and principles. Authenticity has been key—I present my work as it is, without pretenses. “What you see is what you get.”

Sustaining a genuine approach, I am committed to actively listening to others and supporting our community of bakers. I always keep it real and I will always listen, and help others in our community .

Let's learn a little more about you, Jean. What’s your story?

I am Jean A. Schapowal from Cakes with Character, an award-winning cake artist based in Long Island, New York. I have been creating cakes for over 15 years, drawing inspiration from my background as a cartooning and illustration major in art school. My cake creations embody a cartoony, pop, comic book style that is uniquely my own.

I actively participate in cake shows across the country, competing regularly and often achieving recognition for my entries. Additionally, I contribute to numerous online cake collaborations, sharing my expertise and passion with fellow cake artists. It was a great honor to be selected as a finalist for a Cake Masters award in the category of best collaboration. Along my journey, I have also had the privilege of appearing on several TV cake challenges, showcasing my skills to a wider audience.

What I truly love is crafting cakes that are fun and engaging, cakes that truly "pop." When someone lays eyes on one of my creations, I want them to immediately recognize it as a Jean cake. It brings me immense joy to create pieces that leave a lasting impression on people's minds.
